Why Mosquitoes Love Redmond Backyards and How to Keep Them Away

Redmond residents enjoy their warm evenings having backyard barbecues, gardening, or relaxing on the porch. Sadly, mosquitoes can ruin this peaceful time. These tiny pests bite and itch, making it hard to enjoy your own yard. It is important to understand why mosquitoes are drawn to Redmond backyards to take measures against them.

Redmond is a favorite spot for mosquitoes because of its warm summers, mild evenings, and nearby water sources. These insects thrive in areas where there is moisture. Unfortunately, a small puddle or a clogged gutter can be enough for a breeding site.

Mosquito season in Redmond typically begins in late spring and can last into early fall. They hunt for still water to lay their eggs and warm-blooded creatures to feed on during this time. Thus, your yard can quickly become a hotspot if you think about Redmond pest control and determine what draws these insects into your backyard:

What Makes Your Backyard a Target for Mosquitoes

Below are reasons mosquitoes might stay in your backyard:

    • Standing water. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water. They can use a birdbath, plant saucer, or a forgotten toy that holds rainwater as a breeding ground. These pests can also be drawn to clogged gutters, puddles, and leaky outdoor faucets.

    • Overgrown vegetation. Tall grass, dense shrubs, and untrimmed bushes provide perfect hiding spots for mosquitoes during the day. These creatures rest in shady, damp areas and come out when the sun goes down.

    • Yard clutter. Anything in your yard that collects water or provides shelter can help mosquitoes thrive. These hidden spots are often overlooked but offer ideal conditions for them to breed.

    • Human activity. Mosquitoes can be drawn to sweat, body heat, and the carbon dioxide we breathe out. They are especially attracted to people who are active outdoors.

    How to Keep Mosquitoes Away

Keeping mosquitoes at bay is possible by:

    • Getting rid of and draining standing water. Check flowerpots, buckets, and kids’ toys in your yard. Dump the water these containers have collected. Also, refresh the birdbath water every few days. Make sure gutters are clear and draining properly. Consider adding mosquito-eating fish or installing a small fountain to keep the water moving if you have a pond or water feature.

    • Trimming vegetation. Mosquitoes love cool, shady areas, so trimming back overgrown vegetation can reduce their hiding spots. Mow your lawn regularly and trim hedges. Thin out dense plants, so sunlight can reach the soil and dry out damp areas.

    • Using natural repellents. Planting certain herbs and flowers can help keep mosquitoes away. Lavender, citronella, and marigolds have mosquito-repelling scents. You can also burn citronella candles or essential oil torches during evening gatherings. Mosquito-repellent sprays with natural ingredients are available. These can be applied to grassy areas, patios, and the perimeter of your yard for extra protection.

    • Using fans and light strategically. Mosquitoes are weak fliers, so setting up fans on porches or patios can help keep them away. Also, try switching to yellow bug lights outside as mosquitoes are less attracted to these than to regular bulbs.

    • Protecting yourself. Wear long sleeves and pants when spending time outside during mosquito season. You can also apply mosquito repellent to exposed skin, especially around dusk. Choose repellents that are safe for your children’s age and weight.

    • Seeking help from experts. Pest control professionals can handle your mosquito issue if it is too hard for you to address on your own. They can use mosquito treatments that target both adult mosquitoes and their breeding grounds. Many residents trust Pointe Pest Control for their decades of experience in the pest control industry. The company was founded by Jacob Borg, who strongly values professionalism and customer satisfaction when offering their services. Their team uses their knowledge of the local climate and mosquito habits to offer the most suitable treatment for Redmond backyards.
