A deck railing can disappear from your attention for years, or it can sit directly in the middle of everything you hoped to see.
That becomes obvious the first time you sit down. Standing at the edge of a new deck, you may have a clear view across the yard and toward the western horizon. Once a chair is pulled up to the table, your eye level drops and the railing suddenly occupies much more of the scene. The top rail may line up with the mountains. Closely spaced balusters can turn a broad view into a series of narrow vertical openings.

Different Materials Divide the View Differently

There is no universal “view railing.” The background matters too much for that.
A material can almost disappear against one property and look quite prominent on another. This is one of those choices worth seeing outdoors before ordering the entire system. Hold a sample where the railing will actually be installed and step back to the place where you plan to sit.
Don’t Forget the Top Rail
The smaller parts of a railing get plenty of attention, yet the top rail frequently creates the strongest line across the landscape.
Its height is largely governed by safety requirements, but its width, profile, and visual weight can vary considerably between systems. From a chair, that line may land directly across the portion of the yard you most want to see.
A broad top rail also changes character depending on how the deck is used. People tend to gather near deck edges during parties, and a substantial rail can become a natural place to rest an arm while looking into the yard. Visually, though, it will read more strongly from across the deck than a slimmer profile.
Corners deserve attention for the same reason. Several posts coming together in one place can create a heavier visual area. If there is a particularly good view from the deck, it can be worth arranging the furniture so that important sightlines fall between major posts rather than directly behind them.
This is design at a fairly small scale, but you notice the result every day.
Safety Sets the Boundaries
The railing’s first responsibility is structural.
